Liquefied Petroleum Gas
Production of Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) is on the rise with the development of domestic shale drilling. Of the NGLs sourced from hydraulic fracturing, Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a vital fuel source that can be conveniently shipped via rail.
From heating homes to blending with gasoline, LPG is a clean-burning, efficient energy source that is important to everyday life.
Continued expansion of distribution terminals on the CSX network will provide growth as shale gas becomes more readily available and pipelines face constraints. CSX works with LPG producers, refiners and receivers to offer safe, streamlined transportation services.
LPG is shipped in special pressurized tank cars with enhanced safety features, and CSX is committed to moving all freight safely, with special procedures in place for hazardous materials. As a common carrier, CSX is subject to significant federal safety regulations related to the transportation of hazardous materials. We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with transporting these materials and do everything we can to prevent harm to human health and the environment.
We have a long history of safely transporting hazardous materials and we have established the CSX Hazardous Materials Team to respond immediately to emergencies throughout the CSX network. We work in conjunction with state and federal emergency response organizations and ensure our safety standards comply with all regulations established by federal law, the U.S. DOT and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Through our TRANSFLO subsidiary, CSX offers LPG transloading service for safe, efficient transfers of LPG from rail cars to tank trailers. TRANSFLO uses a mobile transloading unit specifically designed for handling LPG and able to transload to 10 tank trucks in a typical day.
