A storm of uncertainty swirls around the future of hundreds of pharmacists in Malaysia. The Health Ministry recently addressed the controversy surrounding the appointment of pharmacists for the July 2024 intake, clarifying the situation and addressing concerns.
The ministry stated that only 600 permanent positions were available for pharmacists during the appointment exercise. This explains why 730 other pharmacy officers from the same intake weren't offered permanent roles.
The ministry explained that permanent appointments were offered to 600 eligible candidates, based on the available vacancies. The remaining contract pharmacists weren't offered permanent positions because there weren't any additional vacant posts beyond the approved establishment.
The ministry also confirmed that the reserve period for the 730 pharmacy officers had already expired in October, following existing appointment procedures.
But here's where it gets controversial... The ministry plans to reopen applications for permanent pharmacist appointments next year, dependent on the availability of new or vacant posts. This means that eligible contract pharmacists, including the 730 affected, will need to reapply when the new intake is announced.
The ministry emphasized its commitment to transparent, merit-based workforce planning, aligned with service needs and approved staffing capacity.
This clarification comes after Senator Dr. RA Lingeshwaran highlighted in the Dewan Negara that only 600 out of 1,330 government pharmacists had been offered permanent posts, leaving the remaining 730 with expiring contracts. Lingeshwaran noted that this was despite previous promises of permanent positions.
And this is the part most people miss... This situation has sparked significant criticism from the medical community. The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has urged the government to reinstate the 'reserve candidate' status for the 730 pharmacists in limbo.
