This isn't an isolated event; the Gold Coast, GWS, and the Brisbane Lions will also host matches in the first week for the third straight season. Adding to the excitement, a St Kilda-Collingwood showdown has been scheduled for Sunday night.
Harley, a former Swans CEO, emphasizes the importance of this approach, stating, 'I think it's unbelievably important and I'm looking forward to the day when we don't talk about traditional states and non-footy states.' He highlights the success of Sydney's opening games, which have generated substantial membership and attendance figures, even for a single club.
The Opening Round, according to Harley, is a win-win situation. It fills a gap in the schedule, as many grounds are unavailable during that time, and it caters to the 58% of the population living north of the Murray River. This strategy, he argues, is essential for establishing the AFL as Australia's premier sport.

Looking ahead, the league plans to continue experimenting with the Opening Round format.
