Aussie tennis sweethearts, Maddison Inglis and Jason Kubler, have just written a new chapter in their love story by securing their spots in the Australian Open main draw within an hour of each other. Talk about a match made in tennis heaven!
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, a little unexpected. Kubler, who had to fight back from a set down against Alexander Blockx, admitted he wasn't sure if he'd ever get this chance again. He described it as a "bumpy ride" since his last Open appearance a couple of years ago. But today, he gets another shot, and what a shot it is!
"It's nice to get another chance," he said with a smile.
And this is the part most people miss: Kubler's joy was even more evident when he watched his fiancée, Inglis, seal her own victory. She defeated Tamara Korpatsch of Germany 6-4, 6-4, securing her first main draw berth since 2022.
"I felt happier watching her qualify than I did at the end of my match," Kubler gushed.
Inglis and Kubler, who got engaged in December, had a unique week, playing their qualifying matches simultaneously. Inglis initially thought Kubler had lost when she saw him at her match shortly after he lost the first set.
"It was a special moment when I realized we'd both made it," Inglis recalled.
In their first main draw appearance together, Kubler will face a tough opponent in world number 29, Francis Tiafoe, while Inglis takes on fellow Aussie, Kimberly Birrell.
Meanwhile, another Aussie, Dane Sweeny, described as a scrapper, also battled his way into the main draw, joining fellow local hope, Storm Hunter, who's made a remarkable comeback after a serious injury.
This year, Australian fans have 21 reasons to cheer, with 11 men and 10 women representing their country across the two main draws. It's the first time since 1992 that four Aussies have reached the Australian Open through qualifying.
So, what do you think? Is this a sign of a bright future for Aussie tennis? Or is it just a lucky coincidence? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
