Get ready, baseball fans! The Dominican Republic is assembling a powerhouse team for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and they're adding some serious firepower.
Junior Caminero, one of the most exciting young sluggers in Major League Baseball, is set to represent his home country for the first time in the WBC. This is huge news for the Dominican Republic, as they aim to reclaim the championship title they last won in 2013, defeating Puerto Rico in a dominant 3-0 victory.
Dominican manager Albert Pujols made the announcement, and the excitement is already building. Caminero, a third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays, is only 22 years old, but he's already making a name for himself. In 2025, he blasted an impressive 45 home runs, placing him among the top hitters in the league.
But here's where it gets interesting: the Dominican Republic's roster is already packed with stars. Imagine the likes of Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Rafael Devers, Manny Machado, and Sandy Alcantara all playing on the same team! Even with such talent, they faced a setback in the 2023 WBC, finishing third in their pool and missing the quarterfinals.
Caminero, who was born in Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital, was ranked as the No. 6 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline when he was first called up to the Majors in September 2023. His performance in 2025 was outstanding, with a batting average of .264, an .846 OPS, 45 home runs, and 110 RBIs for Tampa Bay.
Before the tournament kicks off, Caminero and the Dominican national team will get some practice in his hometown. They'll play the Tigers in two games on March 3-4 at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo. Pool play begins on March 5, with the Dominican team facing Nicaragua in their opener on March 6. The quarterfinal play starts on March 13, and the WBC final is scheduled for March 17 at loanDepot park in Miami.
