NZ TV Shop Scam Exposed: Hidden Reviews, False “Free” Offers & Consumer Rights Violations (2026)

Exposing Deception: How The TV Shop Tricked Consumers and Manipulated Online Reviews

In a striking legal ruling, the District Court has uncovered that The TV Shop engaged in deliberate misconduct by fabricating positive ‘customer’ reviews and actively blocking less favorable feedback, thereby misleading genuine consumers. But here's where it gets controversial—how much can we really trust online reviews when companies are caught manipulating them?

Furthermore, the Court revealed that The TV Shop systematically suppressed lower-rated reviews on its website. When customers posted reviews with fewer stars—say, one, two, or three—the company appeared to inhibit their publication unless these reviewers responded to follow-up emails, suggesting a calculated effort to hide negative feedback from the public eye.

The case also uncovered misleading claims around refunds and free or bonus items. For instance, the company marketed the Air Roaster Pro as including a free accessory pack or a special bonus, but in reality, this accessory was always included when purchasing the product—meaning there was no added value or freebie for customers. They were essentially made to believe they received extra, when the deal was the same as always.

The Court found The TV Shop guilty of 13 violations of the Fair Trading Act over nearly four years. It was proven that staff members, sometimes rewarded for their actions, posted reviews praising products they hadn’t even used, often without disclosing their employment or personal connections to the company. Several staff even asked friends and family to leave glowing reviews. This is more than just a lapse; it’s a clear pattern of deception.

Anne Callinan of the Commerce Commission highlights a crucial point: Consumers rely heavily on online reviews to decide what to buy, and they deserve authentic, truthful feedback. When reviews are manipulated or suppressed, trust is eroded. Moreover, consumers have rights under the law, such as seeking refunds if a product is defective—a right The TV Shop repeatedly misrepresented or dismissed through misleading policies and instructions to call center staff.

The Court’s judgment emphasizes that such practices—like denying legitimate rights, misleading advertisements, and creating a false image of product popularity—are unacceptable. For example, the Court pointed out that the use of staff reviews was part of a systematic effort by the company to create a controlled narrative about its products.

Judge Sellars KC called out the company for widespread denial of consumer rights, noting that some staff inaccurately claimed that the company’s conditions superseded New Zealand’s consumer laws, which is both misleading and legally questionable.

This case underscores a fundamental truth—businesses must be transparent and honest in their dealings, especially in an era where online reputation can make or break their success. The Commerce Commission, having previously sanctioned The TV Shop twice since 2015 for related issues, reminds all companies that deceptive practices carry serious legal consequences. The story now heads to a penalty hearing, but the bigger conversation is this: how can consumers protect themselves when some companies see honesty as an obstacle rather than a standard?

What are your thoughts? Do you believe stricter regulations are enough to combat such widespread manipulation, or is there a deeper change needed in how businesses build trust online? Share your opinions below.
