2026: The Year Alex de Minaur Aims to Unleash His Inner 'Demon'
As the calendar flips to 2026, many of us are making and breaking resolutions. But for Australian tennis sensation Alex de Minaur, this year marks the beginning of a quest to enter 'uncharted territory' in the world of professional tennis.
De Minaur, currently ranked as the world No. 7, is fresh off another impressive season, filled with both triumphs and a few challenging moments, including a tough loss at the ATP Finals where he admitted to experiencing some 'dark' feelings. However, true to his 'Demon' moniker, he bounced back in his next match and fought his way to the semi-finals, ultimately falling to the formidable Jannik Sinner. Sinner is aiming for a third consecutive Australian Open title later this month.
For de Minaur, the goal isn't just about climbing the rankings; it's about achieving significant titles and making deep runs in Grand Slam tournaments, where he hopes to challenge and defeat the world's best players. He's setting his sights on breaking through, aiming for those coveted titles and making a statement on the grandest stages of the sport.
"I want to try to get into uncharted territory, whatever that may be," de Minaur stated, just before Australia's opening match at the United Cup in Sydney. He's eyeing a Masters title, having reached a final before, and is determined to keep improving and reaching new goals in the Grand Slams. He believes that focusing on improvement and results will naturally lead to a higher ranking, rather than putting undue pressure on himself.
But here's where it gets controversial...
If de Minaur wants to go beyond the quarter-finals in Grand Slams, he'll need to find a way to overcome Sinner and world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who have dominated the major titles in recent times. De Minaur's record against these two top players is 0-18. He sees this as a challenge, not a setback, and aims to disrupt their rhythm and game plan.
"It's a challenge, and that's the way to look at it. If not, then you have essentially already given up," he explained. "I see it as a challenge and I want to bridge that gap. For me to do that, I need to look at my game and see what ways I can try to hurt them." He plans to evolve his game, adding versatility and showcasing his all-court skills to keep his opponents off balance. The strategy involves disrupting their rhythm, using his speed to take away their time, and taking more risks.
His journey towards his 2026 goals begins at the United Cup, where he achieved straight-set victories in both singles matches last year and defeated Novak Djokovic and other top players in 2024.
"It’s great for me to start in Sydney at my home event where I grew up,” he said. "It’s a place very close to my heart and a court which I love playing on. It’s no secret that I love to start the year after a good pre-season here in Sydney and be able to play in front of a packed crowd. It’s pretty special and something I’ll never take for granted.”
His opening match is against Norwegian Casper Ruud, against whom de Minaur has a 2-0 record, including a victory at the Mexican Open final in 2024.
Interestingly, the pair recently competed in a nine-dart challenge on Sky Sports, where Ruud emerged victorious.
"He was pretty good at darts. I missed out on that one. He got the better of me, so I’ll have to get back to the drawing board,” de Minaur joked. “On the tennis court, he’s an incredible competitor. For me to get the win, I’m going to have to bring out my best level from the very first point to the last."
And this is the part most people miss...
De Minaur is determined to start the year strong, aiming for a match with a lot of rhythm, and hoping to play some great tennis.
